hatching, selling and beyond

Wednesday, February 27, 2013
I set the incubator on the 4th of Feb with 37 eggs. I had one that I tossed at 10 days and now I have 6 that have hatched under Honey my broody hen. These are the ones that we are going to be keeping for they are 5 green eggs and 1 brown. The other 24 that have hatched in the incubator are for sale and it looks like some one is going to come and get them later today. After this I think Ia m going to have to make a new incubator for I am having to help most of them out of there shell for they keep getting shrink wrapped. I would like to make a nicer one that has turners. We can only wait to see what happens.
Now on to the meat part of this. I have been doing the math and have found that we are going to have to butcher out at lease 104 chickens each summer just to have enough for the year at 2 a week. After doing the math I am going to have to build a plucker just so that we can get it done in a timely fashion. I have been looking on line and found that I really would like to have a drum type chicken plucker to do my chicken in. I am even thinking of making it human powered so that we can get moving a bit more and I don't have to use electric to run it. I am also going to have to get some killing cones or make them and a few other things to be able to butcher that many chickens fast enough.
I also hope that we will be able to add Rabbit to the dinner menu soon. Again we are going to need around 52 or more to have rabbit once a week. Rabbit is not hard to butcher out at all if you have two people doing it. We are also going to have to get up to 4 goats and a few lambs. By doing this we will have all the meat that we can eat in a year. Don't get me wrong I like my beef and pork but at the price of meat in the store we are just going to have to raise what we can, and a cow is a bit to big for the area we have. We will do a pig every year too but with all of this it is going to take time to get set up.
With the weather being so cold we are not able to get the garden boxes build. I am going to try and get my seeds started in the house this week. I just need to have a place that is save from all the cats so that they can grow. I just hope that we will be able to grow enough for the family.

Thinks are looking up

Looks like I have found a place that will buy my eggs. They may not buy them all but at least I will be getting them out of the frig a bit faster. Eggs in the incubator are doing good. Only had to remove one after candling the other day. As soon as the weather is a bit better we are really going to have to put 4 or 5 roosters in to freezer camp. I have 12 tweens that I am going to have to move before the 24 so that I have room for my broody hen, that is on some plastic Easter eggs till the eggs that are in the incubator hatch, at that time I will put her and the 4 or 5 green eggs in the pen. The rest of the eggs that hatch I will be trying to sell. I really don' t need any more hen right now.
I am looking forward to being able to get my rabbits someday soon. Still have to find a place for the cage to go that will be safe. I am thinking of hanging it in the run that the chicken use a bit. This is about the only place that I can think of that would be safe and dry where the droppings would not really be to much of a problem. I am not sure if this is a good thing or not. The chicken don't really stay in the run unless I having to lock them up for a few days to get them to use the nest boxes and not the woods. I would have to find a place in the winter a bit safer that has protection form the wind more. I really need a new chicken/rabbit barn.Using my husband shop as a chicken coop is not going to work forever, but till they can pay for this new building that is where they are going to be is in his shop.
All the cats are getting along with the new kitten except Snowflake(Missy) She is the only female cat that we have and she is a bitch. She is spending a lot more time outside and that is fine with me. She is fixed. She is the only cat that has two answering machines and never checks them. she does not like to be held, or spent time time in lap hence the two answering machines. All the other cats at least check theirs and will spent time in laps. This is from a saying "dog come when called, cats have answering machines"
I found a new bread recipe that was awesome. Going to be making it a lot for a time since I seem to not be able to get enough of it. I just put everything in my kitchen-aid and let it do its job, the bread was light and airy. Yes the yeast and all, I did not proof the yeast at all, and it worked.

Yet another addition to the family

Okay we really did not want any more house animals but this one just let itself in and made his self at home.
I have never seen a black cat with the golden/brown eyes. I think he is about 3 to 4 months old. We are not sure where he came form but he has made his self at home and know how to use the litter box. He need to gain a bit of weight and he will be doing really good. You can see his ribs, back bone and his tail bones, but we are feeding him 6 to 8 time a day 1/6 of a can of food mixed with 1/8th cup dry and he is doing good with that. As he getting the weight on we will stop the wet food. He is the only cat getting wet and that is only because a co-worker of my husbands gave it to us(her cats can't have seafood types). In just a little over 24 hours his coat is already looking and feeling better. We have named him Shadow for he follows me every where. He does have a white dot on his chest and belly alone with some white in the armpit area.
He loves to cuddle with our older dog that we just found out has arthritis in her lower spine and left back knee. With some meds she is moving around much better but don't like to be cuddled with by the kitten.

Eggs, Eggs and More eggs, what to do

Tuesday, February 5, 2013
With having 25 hens that can lay I am getting more eggs than I know what to do with. We put a sign at the end of the drive to try and sell them and so far nothing,  of course I live on a very slow road.

Below is the frig with all the eggs in it. The top three or for my grandson and everyone in his household. We give him the pee-wees. The other 11 1/2 dozen are to be sold. I am starting to keep some on the counter for hatching eggs, if any one would like them.

Yesterday we put 37 eggs on the incubator, going to sell the chicks when they come, all but the ones form the green eggs. I plan on have us use only the green eggs. If I don't start selling some soon I am going to have to do a freezer camp stock up. We seem to be going through about 3 50# bags a feed a week and that is just to much. I do have 7+ roosters to deal with, but the weather just has not been that good on the weekend when hubby is home to kill them. I can do every part of the process but the killing.

It is getting to be time to get the garden started. We still have to build all our boxes, get the soil and all that. I have our plans made up. We are looking at three 4 x 4 boxes. One that has nothing in the middle for we are going to use it for the peas and green beans. One side will be peas the other green beans with tomatoes on each end. There is an old swinging chair frame that we are going to use for the frame for them to run on. One of the other boxes is going to be salad greens, carrots, onions and the likes and the last is going to be peppers with spinach and radish around the plants.
