time to clean

Monday, May 30, 2011
Today I cleaned out the chicken coop and moved the 4 week old chicks out there for they where making a big stink in the brooder pen. I candled the eggs in the incubator and had to remove 5 more so that leave 16 for hatch day. The 8 littles that are still in the house are all in the pen now. The brooder box is almost ready for the next hatch date that is on June 4th. I have a dozen more eggs to put in the incubator after this hatch, they are all Easter Eggers.
The garden is growing very fast I hope to be picking some radish and lettuce here soon. The spinach should be some time after that. I am already getting flowers on the tomato plant and am going to have to put a cage around it soon.
The wild rabbits are getting very brave for they are coming almost up to the back door. Yesterday when we pulled in there where two of them right by the back door area. I have also had deer running through the yard.

Rain, rain, and more rain

Wednesday, May 25, 2011
We have been having a lot of rain this yr. so far to date I would say that in just the past two month we have had 20 inches more or less. With all the rain I can not get anything done that I need to get done so it gets put on a list to do later. The good think with all the rain is that the garden is doing really good. I should have radishes soon and the lettuce and spinach is going to be here before I know it.
The baby chickens are getting ready to go outside but it is still going to be a bit of time with all the rain. We did have 4 more hatch on Sunday. I decided to try putting the eggs in a egg carton to see how it worked well for me it did not work to well, I will stick to leaving them on there side on the wire is going to be the way that I do it. I have also found out that what I thought was a Dominique rooster is not for the comb is all wrong, but what he really is is a Plymouth Rock. Now I just hope that I have more hens than roosters when from the 15 chicks that I have. I am going to write a page on incubating that I hope some will find useful.

New addition

Saturday, May 21, 2011
We have added to the family by getting a baby kitten. She is a handful and can really make me laugh. I have to have stuff to do so that I am not doing anything. I should go out and weed the strawberries so that they have room to grow, I guess I will do that in a bit. I also have to clean out he chicken coop and spray it down with bleach water and put Lyme on the floor under the pine shavings. I am cleaning this all up so that I can put my babies in there sometime next month since they are starting to get to big for there room and I have 9 more baby chicks coming tomorrow. There is a lot to be done I just hate to be doing all alone. Well I better get to it.

Going out

Saturday, May 14, 2011
Today Hubby and I went to the auction for the fun of it and I got 5 baby chicks and 24 eggs to hatch. The eggs are a mix batch so I will be adding a number of new breeds to my flock, which is what I really want to do. I might not get eggs till Sept or Oct, but at least I will be getting eggs then. I think we can wait that long for good eggs. The eggs in the stores just don't taste as good to me. Here are pictures:

Here are the babies that I got, the two black are mine that hatched Monday

here are the 24 eggs with the 9 that I already had.
Here are the two week old chicks

Working outside

Tuesday, May 10, 2011
Yesterday I got the garden in, let hope that nothing eats it. I planted a tomato, a pepper, lettuce, radishes, onions, carrots, spinach, marigolds and 3 broccoli in my one square. I hope that I will be able to replant some of the square later in the yr. I am going to also try and get another square build so that I can plant more but that is going to have to wait for a bit. I am working on getting they yard free of ticks so that I don't have to worry about them getting ticks. So far we have got he front yard so that I can work in my garden. I hate to have to use stuff on the yard but the ticks are just so bad that we really don't have a choice. The chickens are just not enough. I don't what to get any guinea fowl but I might have to. They just make so much noise and the males can be really mean during mating season. If I do get any I will start with eggs or Keets so that they are raised on the land and stay close.

I still have to get the pig pen built and try to expand the chicken coop so that I have a place to put all the little chicken as they are ready to go out side. Yesterday Snappy gave me a double yolk egg again and it was two full size yolk inside, It was as big or bigger than the last one that she gave me. A few days a go one of my chickens died and I have two more that I might as well just cull for they are still sick and seems that they are not going to be getting any better. One of them is Bella. Snappy seems to have gotten better and at least she is laying eggs. The white chickens don't every really leave the coop so they just eat the feed that I buy. I have lots of land for them to roam on and eat grass, bugs and what every else they might like, but no they stay in the coop. I will never get any more white chickens for they are most likely battery bird being where I live. See I live in Tyson chicken area and there are house all over the place. Turkeys are raised here in the same way. I will see what I can do at the auction this weekend or next once my husband is not working nights any more.

Looks as the goat that my friend is going to be bring me are not going to come till July so that gives me more time to get ready for them.

New brooder for the chicks

Friday, May 6, 2011
Well, the babies are doing just fine. They started in a 30 gallon tote and in just 5 days they were getting to big to be in it

so they got moved in to there new brooder.
They will stay in this one in the house till the night time temp are high enough for them to be outside over night without a heat light. I dont' have a 100 ft cord to go to the hen house to use a heat lamp out there with all the rain that we are getting. Here is a picture of the little ones, looks to be 5 hens and 6 roosters but not sure till they grow up.

Cheap laundry soap and softener

Monday, May 2, 2011
One of the ways that I work on saving money is that I make my own laundry soap. I follow the Duggar's family recipe for the powder soap for I don't have the room for the liquid for that makes 10 gallons, and would last me for 2 to 5 yrs. For a laundry soften I use vinegar, the small is not there. I do use dryer sheets for static for I have yet to find anything cheaper for it.
I also use vinegar to clean with for it is safer than bleach and I don't have to worry about my grandkids getting into it, and it is save for my animals.

All the baby chicks are doing very good, but I think that more than half of them might be rooster.

Fuzzy butt pictures

Sunday, May 1, 2011
Here are the pictures of the fuzzy butts. The two that are different are a friends, she wanted to see if any of her eggs would hatch and to our surprise all 4 that she brought down did. I have a total of 13 at lock down and 11 of them made it. I did have to help 3 of them for they got shrink wrapped. They all are doing good. Here they are

I have already set 10 more eggs along with the large double yolk and 2 others that are due on the 9th. The new 10 are due on May 22, after that I will be on the look out for some Easter Egg chickens so that I can have some green and blue tinted eggs. I would love to have a rainbow or egg colors.
