New chickens in there new home

The chickens are settling in and I am hoping that I might be able to get more this weekend for I don't think these are going to be laying anytime soon. I know that chickens don't lay all that well in the winter but I don't think the chickens that I got are even old enough to be laying yet, but they can not be to far from it. I am watch daily and will post when they do.
I am hoping that my husband get two days off this weekend so that I can get one of my garden plots done and get some plants in to it. I have peas, lettuce and broccoli that is already coming up in the house along with some other plants that are staring to show signs of coming up like the corn that I am trying. So far my peppers have not came up but they might take some time, this is only week 2 of them being planted.
We still have to get the pig pen build but that is going to cost around $125 for all the part or more. We still have some time before he comes home. We are only going to have the pig till the fall and that is when he is going to go to the butcher shop. Boy I hope I have a freeze by then.
We are still looking at buying a place of our own but then again we are very happy in the rental that we are in for I am getting to start my farm and that is a big part of what I want to do. With my husband working the night shift I am not cooking like I did for I don't like to cook just for myself. I do cook a large brunch for us in the afternoon. Since it is still winter there is not a lot for me to do outside for it is still cold most of the time, so for now I read, watch TV and work on my craft project. At this time I really don't know what I am working I am just working to keep busy. I am looking forward to spring getting here so I can get out more.

getting the farm started

I am so happy at this time for I got my first chickens last night. Yesterday there was a auction that sell junk and farm animals and we went. Well needless to say I had to leave before the animal ever started being sold and go to town to get our month running done. We had meet our friends up there so we told them what we wanted and how much for each, and that was not going to work for they were going much higher than the price I wanted to pay. Well I told her that the money that I had given her was my allowence for the chickens and to do her best and this is what I got for that. The rooster I already had. Over time I will be getting more but for now I think this is good for a start for some one that had never had chickens before.
Over the next week I am going to work on my first garden bed for there is word that it is suppose to snow again over the next week. I am also going to have to start getting the pig pen build for he is about ready to come home.
I now have lots to do if the weather will just work with me.

Planning the garden

Thursday, February 17, 2011
With all the snow that we got I was stuck in the house for a few days not being able to get anything done outside. Well, next week I am going to work on my garden beds and the pig pen.Over the weekend I am going to try and buy some chickens to go with the rooster that I already have. Here is the plan for the garden. some of the plants will be planted at different times so that I have a harvest over a few weeks and not all at once. I got Peas, peppers, corn(seeing what happens), lettuce, spinach and broccoli started in the house now. I am hoping that I will be able to get the beds done this weekend so I can try to plant a square of peas outside.

Snow that never ends

Wednesday, February 9, 2011

Well I moved out here to see snow but this is just to much. We were told that it would be 4 to 6 inches and at this time it is over 18+ inches and still snowing. I had to push snow with the back door just to get the door open to let the dogs go out. At about 4:30 there was only 2 inches and now at 8:00 there is over 18+ inches. The picture with the cat in the door is looking at the door jam and the snow is up that high.
I told my husband that we would be getting more than the news cast told us and as of this time it is 3X the amount. I got the news on and they just said that Fayettville we have gotten 3 yrs worth of snow in the last 4 hours. I live about 45 minutes from Fayettville. I am going to stay that we are having records broke all over the area. The good new is that we are going to be getting into the 50 over the weekend.
